Diablo 2’s last patch to make changes to class balance was 1.13c, released on March 23, 2010. Currently Diablo 2: Resurrection getting new tweaks for class balance, as explained in a Blizzard blog post. The ladder game is also being rolled out in early 2022.
The post states that changes to classes are being made “to expand the variety of character builds, while retaining the magic and specialness of the class.” Without going into specific changes to come, they then talk about the philosophy behind each class revision.
For example, they intend to increase the power of unused Amazon melee skills such as Impale and Feud. As for the Assassin class, they wanted Martial Arts builds to become more viable on high difficulty, and so “are re-evaluating how to improve the generation and use of Fusion Points.” As for the Necromancer, they are planning to “improve specific Summons”, making the less-used Golems more effective.
The pattern is the same for each description: in general, they think the current class is good, but they “see interesting opportunities” to tweak a few variables and make some gameplay easy. more present or useful.
Meanwhile, the ladder-ranked modes will match those available in the original game: standard, heavy, standard expansion, and heavy expansion. Progressing through the ladder ranks unlocks brand new “Rune Words” that can only be used in the Ladder game. When the Ladder part is over, your character will switch to the “non-Ladder” version of the game and you will need to create a new character to play the new part. Ladder ladder, ladder ladder. Currently, they think each season will last about four months.
