Details of Stellantis Hurricane 3.0 liter twin turbocharger inline six

Inline-six engines are gaining popularity again as automakers want to deliver the same power and torque as a V8, but in a more efficient package.

Officially known as GME-T6, Storm No. 6 straight shares barrel, stroke and cylinder spacing with the GME-T4 Hurricane 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, available in WranglerWrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid, Cherokee and the Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrid.

The Hurricane’s six-cylinder engine will initially be available in two trims. The Standard Output the engine will generate at least 298kW (400hp) and 610Nm. The electronic limiter stops the engine from operating above 5800 rpm.

In High output Forming the engine will make at least 373kW (500hp) and 644Nm, with 6100rpm being the maximum engine speed. Exact torque and power output will vary from vehicle to vehicle.

According to Stellantis, the Hurricane’s inline-six engine produces 90% of its peak torque from 2350 rpm to the red line.

As well as the four-cylinder Hurricane engine, the inline-six version will also be used in the plug-in hybrid powertrain. Details about the PHEV applications are yet to be released.

The Hurricane six features a cast aluminum block, forged steel crankshaft and connecting rods, and a low-friction Plasma Transfer Wire Arc ultra-thin coating for the cylinder bores. Automatic motor stop/start is also standard.

To reduce turbine lag, there are two low-inertia turbines, each supplying three cylinders. The turbos in the standard engine deliver a maximum boost of 22psi, while the high-powered version maxes out at 26psi.

Other upgrades to the high-output engine include forged pistons rather than cast aluminum, dual injection pumps, diamond coating for the pins, and a compression ratio of 9.5:1 instead of 10.4. : 1. Premium lead-free is required for high power engines, but recommended for standard engines only.

The new engine will be built at the Saltillo Engine Plant in Mexico, and will be used primarily in larger North American-made vehicles, including future vehicles based on the STLA architecture. Large and STLA Frame.

If the company configurator slide up The Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer will likely be the first vehicles to use the new engine.

According to a summary taken yesterday, the straight-six Hurricane will be a $2000 upgrade ($2660) over the 351kW/617Nm 6.4-litre V8.

The engine is expected to make its debut in the flesh at next month’s New York motor show.

In time, the number six hurricane will probably find its way in Grand Cherokee and Ram 1500 pickups. It can also replace the Dodge Challenger coupe and Charger sedan.
