Delta Airlines buying 100 Boeing The 737 Max 10 aircraft, the first major order for a new aircraft from the US manufacturer in more than a decade.
The deal includes options for another 30 aircraft. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2025.
The new order is good news for Boeing as Airbus has recently won high orders, including for China’s state-owned airlines. Boeing lamented the trade tensions when that order was announced.
Atlanta-based Delta is the only one of the top four U.S. airlines not to order new Boeing jets in recent years, backing Airbus as it bolsters both its narrow-body and fuselage fleets. wide. Delta has retired older Boeing 777s during the pandemic and has taken delivery of more Airbus A350 twin-aisle aircraft.
The 737 Max has been grounded for at least 18 months after the second of two deadly crashes in 2018 and 2019 that killed 346 people. The United States removed the engines in November 2020. Delta’s competitors during that time faced capacity constraints because deliveries of the new Maxs were halted.
The Max 10 model is the largest model in the narrow-bodied Max family and has not yet been approved by the government. Boeing hopes to win approval for the planes before the end of the year. Regulations passed after the two crashes would require new planes to be equipped with a cockpit warning system.
Delta CEO Ed Bastian had previously hinted at a Max plane order. When asked at a recent investor conference about a potential narrow-body order, Bastian said: “We’re trying to close a deal with Boeing on that… can figure that out.”
Boeing shares were up 3% in pre-market trading, while Delta shares were up 1.6%.
Most of Delta’s new orders in recent years have come from Europe’s Airbus.
In 2017, Delta was in a trade dispute between Boeing and Canada’s Bombardier, the maker of the narrow-body C-Series aircraft that Delta had ordered. Boeing accused Bombardier sold the planes below cost, a case in which it ended up losing money. Airbus later took over the program, renaming the planes A220.
