Every plane passenger deserves hope.

Especially after the recent years we’ve all been through. Especially this recent summer.

Thousands of flights canceledThousands of business trips were ruined and thousands of passengers went crazy because of poor technology, resulting in four hours of waiting. Access to customer service.

Then you’d be forgiven for thinking that flying through these holidays wouldn’t be so easy.

After all, airlines say they have never seen such strong demand. And when there’s high demand, there’s a good chance there’s a lot of packed planes, full schedules and delays, always caused by weather or, um, operational issues.

You might think airlines would be cautious in their promises for the holiday season.

But then Ed Bastian, CEO of Delta Air Lines, appeared on NBC’s Today Show. His face was completely happy.

“We were basically at the peak of tourism for the whole year,” he laughs musingly.

However, he was asked about those disappointing and desperate summer memories.

“Have you solved all those problems?” NBC’s Hoda Kotb wondered. “Do you have enough pilots, enough planes, enough customer service, enough bad weather plans? Are you ready?”

You can imagine Bastian could have risked a bet or two. You might think that he might have spoken in a down-to-earth, under-promotion or over-delivery style.

For Bastian replied, “Yes, yes, yes and yes.”

“Oh no,” I hear you sniffle.

But Bastian insists the airline has been operating with a high level of reliability and service excellence since the second week of July. He explained Delta has employed 25,000 people since the beginning of 2021.

One can only hope they have embarked on a new job with ready expertise to match their psyche.

Alright, so you’re safe. You are an optimist.

Perhaps, then, you didn’t hear. You see, Delta pilots recently voted to go on strike. Together with the pilots of other major airlines, they have been trying to get a new contract for quite some time. They were pickedeting. They complained. They threatened.

Posing the issue, Bastian suggested: “It’s unlikely they could strike. On Thanksgiving, Christmas or any other time.”

The airline is currently reconciling with the pilots. Bastian said the threat to attack was just a tactic. Oh, and: “It would be against the laws of the country if they did.”

But if there’s one thing we’ve learned over the last few years, it’s law-schmaws. And if there’s something a lot of people have learned in Europe, it’s that a strike may not be a strike, but a work rule can really mess things up.

Oddly enough, the pilots union had an observation to make.

“Let me be completely clear,” union president, captain Jason Ambrosi. “These implications are false. We have every right to strike. A strike is not illegal, nor is the threat of attack simply a tactic.”

Are these merely men swinging swords at a safe distance? Maybe. But it’s still a bit conceivable that Delta pilots might strike over Christmas.

It is also conceivable that, if a cancellation happens to you during the holiday period, you may not receive the impeccable customer service Bastian promised.

That’s the thing about promises. They’re not always kept on a regular basis, are they?

And wait, is this the Delta that I see YouTube ads for customer experience professionals? I believe it is so.

But I think the airline is completely ready.

Maybe you can never be too ready when you’re an airline. Perhaps you should never over-promise either.
