Stop What You’re Doing—This BIPOC Designer Just Launched a Line at Kohl’s

Calm down, one of the biggest perks of my job is exposure to new brands. As you can imagine, I’ve met hundreds of designers since becoming a fashion editor, but I find the most joy in discovering BIPOC designers on their way to the top. Recently, such a brand caught my attention and it is only available at Kohl’s. Barbara Clarke Ruiz designed the latest sports pants from Tek . Equipment. She is a creative designer with over 20 years of experience creating fashion designs for the sports/active wear industry. She’s bringing her holistic vision into this partnership and is making all the bold, bright statements I’ve been looking for this season. My fellow editors, Indya Brown and Sierra Mayhew, are also craving some color right now, and they’re turning to Kohl’s to find all of its hidden gems. Below, they’ve gathered four styles featuring products from Tek Gear and another Kohl’s own brand, Intempo (by the way, both have on-trend plus size options). Keep scrolling — the results are far from perfect.

“I don’t have any bright, colorful tracksuits on the menu,” she said. “You won’t find a color combination like this, which makes the outfit so unique.” The way she styled it also helped—the combination of heels and tracksuit is a powerful move that gives the outfit just the right amount. As Indya describes it, the set is “a fashion girl’s sporty expression.”

“I really like strong color combinations, so it’s basically like a block of color but a little more nuance,” says Indya. Take, for example, the sky blue dress she’s wearing with her electric yellow heels. “Strong colors were on trend for a while and I was on that train from the start!”

“Bold splashes of color brighten up my workouts as the weather turns colder, so investing in a new piece of clothing is always a good idea. She says, “I’m always looking for items that not only fit my pocket, but feel very high. I’ve never had a problem finding exactly that from Kohl’s, and whenever I do, I’ve never had a problem. When I shop there, I find something that no one else has.”

Sierra tells me, “As we approach fall, utilitarian items have caught my eye, and you’ll often find me wearing wide-leg pants or low-rise jeans, the more utilitarian items end up. matching blouse shows my feminine side. Cargo pants have been trending for months now, and Sierra is on sale on these pants, only available at Kohl’s. “I feel like I might have found the best pair I’ve ever owned. The ankle clip makes them so flattering,” she says.
