Ah, nature. It’s a beautiful place but also a place full of dangers born from story to story. From fictional wonders that inspire the wilderness to real-life stories of wildlife making the extraordinary, the wild world never disappoints.
And This video is from a security camera in Wisconsin’s Nordic Mountain County Park brings us another incredible moment that reminds us that while nature’s instincts are evil, those instincts can also be used to protect defenseless prey caught in the hands of predators. Watch the scene where a deer rushes in to save a rabbit from the clutches of a hawk and then brutally pinches the bird down.
Who Knows Deer Rock Tails?
Kris Miller, CEO of Nordic Mountains, was out pruning trees when he came across a dead red-tailed hawk lying in the middle of a green field. Checking the CCTV, Kris was “astonished” at the footage.
The video shows a hawk swooping down and grabbing a rabbit. Captured by the hawk, things went awry for the feathered bird. But suddenly, stepping in from the stage on the right, a doe swooped down into the field and circled the hawk, furiously attacking the bird with its front legs.
The rabbit rushed to safety, but the deer continued to attack the hawk. And she continued the fight for maybe two minutes, pouncing and stomping and biting until the bird stopped moving. The deer eventually turned away but turned several times to pounce on the bird, as if it were checking to see if the hawk was really dead.
A second deer crosses the screen and quickly dashes away, leaving the doe to kick the hawk again! Then the second deer turned to inspect the scene, looking like she was saying to her friend, “Hey, I think you get it.”
Why such a reaction?
But what made the doe save the rabbit and kill the hawk?
“The rabbit started screaming for help and the deer may have mistook it for its baby,” Kris explain. “Or maybe, it’s just a true story about Bambi and Thumper.”

Whatever the reason for the deer’s reaction, it dispels the notion that all deer are sweet little Bambis as this video reveals a side of the gentle and graceful creatures that they are. We never thought it was possible. And as it turns out, deer are actually action heroes for those in need.
