For what seems like forever is now, both David Benavidez and Caleb Plant directly exchanged threatening looks and hurled vulgar threats at each other on social media.
The roots of their long-standing grudge for each other went far beyond what Benavidez could remember. However, despite the amount of vitriol they both express to each other, Benavidez insists that there is no bad blood between them. That said, however, the former two-time super middleweight belt holder is eager to give his teammate a fight of his life.
“No beef,” Benavidez said in a recent interview with Behind The Gloves. “I will defeat him. There’s no beef behind it, I don’t like him and he doesn’t like me. ”
While Benavidez longs to take on Plant, he refuses to look past his incoming opponent. On May 21, at the Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona, Benavidez will attempt to separate David Lemieux from consciousness. If the 25-year-old succeeds, he will wrap a temporary WBC tiara around his waist.
With Benavidez eyeing a final bout against Canelo Alvarez, boxing’s biggest draw, he believes he will need more than just a temporary WBC title to lure him into the ring.
After closely watching both Alvarez and Plant fight during 11 tough rounds in November 2021, a light bulb flashed in Benavidez’s mind. If the flamboyant ex-player can not only confront Plant, but also dispatch him in a violent fashion, he believes he will have Alvarez’s undivided attention.
“I don’t like Caleb Plant but honestly, I need him. I need him to reach the next level. I need to fight those who fight Canelo. He needs me too. Who else will he fight after me? I feel we need each other.”
