Damon’s Mound will break out before the 3-year-old campaign
Saratoga Special Stakes (G2) Winner Damon’s Mound is on winter break before embarking on his second year campaign at Fair Grounds & Slotsaccording to coach Michelle Lovell.
Joint son of Michelle and Cliff Love Girvin will rejuvenate at AppleRidge Farm, about 30 miles west of Lexington, with Lark Carroll. He will be joined by the multi-stakes winner Just Might and subsidy winners Margie’s kitchen .
“He really didn’t want to rest. He was really full of life,” Lovell said. “But we’ve never had a 2-year-old with this much talent, and we thought now would be a good time to let him grow up and pony.”
Lovell said Damon’s Mound will be off for about 60 days. When the foal can appear in the Road to the Kentucky Derby prep race will be up to him to decide, according to Lovell, though she hopes that will be an option when the time comes.
“He’s a very interesting pony who gave us such a thrill at Saratoga this year; a real gift,” said Lovell. “We are expecting more next year.”
Damon’s Mound won its debut at 12 and a half hours on July 2 at Churchill Downs. He was followed by a 3/4 victory in the Saratoga Special match. In the end, he was caught in a speedfight during the Iroquois Stakes (G3) early game and finished in sixth place. He made $147,810 this year.
