Verifying Back for Another Sprint Try in Perryville
A trio of starters from this year’s Kentucky Derby (G1) will meet in a seven-furlong sprint Oct. 21 at Keeneland.
Morning-line favorite and grade 3 winner Verifying , Rebel Stakes (G2) winner Confidence Game , and grade 3 winner Raise Cain are entered in the $250,000 Perryville Stakes for 3-year-olds. Each finished off the board in the Kentucky Derby May 6 at Churchill Downs.
- After a solid seven-furlong run in his previous start—a runner-up finish to One in Vermillion in the H. Allen Jerkens Memorial Stakes (G1) Aug. 26 at Saratoga Race Course, Verifying will break from the rail in Saturday’s expected field of six. Campaigned by owners associated with Coolmore and trained by Brad Cox, the son of Triple Crown winner Justify captured the Indiana Derby (G3) and has placed in three grade 1 races.
- Don’t Tell My Wife Stables and Ocean Reef Racing’s Confidence Game will make his first start since finishing 10th in the Derby. Before that effort the son of Candy Ride won the Rebel at Oaklawn Park.
- Andrew and Rania Warren’s Raise Cain finished second in the Indiana Derby, a nose behind Verifying. The Violence colt won this year’s Gotham Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct.
The Perryville also will mark the stakes debut of Dr. Venkman , who won his first two career starts at Del Mar this summer by a combined 10 3/4 lengths.
