There are expensive. Then there’s the price, and at $12,000, the Sony 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS lens falls into the latter category. So, what makes it so expensive, and most importantly, is it worth it?
Having lived in many different countries around the world and traveled to countless other places along the way, I have learned that everything in life is relative, depending on one’s circumstances. Usually, however, those who earn that kind of money are the exception, as most of us don’t have such disposable income to spend frivolously on items few would call essentials. But where do you draw the line, especially when it comes to photography? As for me, I would argue that any item up north is $3,000 more expensive, and if I’m going to buy it, I have to be absolutely certain that it fares well ahead of anything else in terms of performance compared to the others. what I had.
But $12,000 for a single item, such as a lens? I can’t even imagine what my expectations would be if I owned it. Priced at just under $12,000, the lens is described as a super-fast super-telephoto prime, built for wildlife and sports shooters working under experimental conditions.
