Countries have vowed to strengthen their climate commitments by 2022. Very few have done so.

Last fall, at a global climate summit in Scotland, countries around the world accepted what appeared to be a major commitment in the quest to combat climate change.

Acknowledging that progress is too slow, the leaders agreed arrive “revisit and reinforce“Their national climate targets where possible next year – instead of waiting every five years, as envisioned in 2015 Paris Climate Agreement.

But as the world prepares to reconnect in Egypt this month for COP27, the United Nations’ annual conference on climate change, hardly any of the world’s largest emitters have made stronger commitments. Overall, few countries have stepped up their ambitions, despite a year of floods, fires and other climate-related disasters.

To date, only one major country has submitted a plan that includes more credible and robust emissions-cutting pledges: Australia.

The reason for weak commits is obvious.

The world is once again experiencing what happens when climate ambition collides with the laws of physics and chemistry.

There is no renewable energy substitute for the status quo, and never will be. But as long as politicians with technical dyslexia continue to put money into doing the impossible, as long as they ignore past failures, the waste, frustration, and failure are worth it. Unfortunately this will continue.
