More than half of UK households have cut energy use due to the cost of living crisis, new data shows.
A survey conducted by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) found that 52 per cent of Britons are using less gas and electricity in an attempt to cut costs.
The poll, conducted from May 25 to June 5, also shows the number of people saying they are spending less on food and necessities – from 36% two weeks ago to 41%.

The average energy bill for homes on the standard variable tariff jumped 54% in April after the government changed the price cap.

The ONS survey found that 40% of people say they are cutting back on non-essential travel to avoid paying more for gas.
More than three-quarters of households also said they had seen fuel prices rise.
According to the latest data from RAC and Experian, the average cost of petrol is 183.2p a liter and 188.8p a liter for the diesel.
The high oil prices are the result of a rise in oil prices, largely due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the post-COVID surge in demand.
There are concerns that they will rise even further, after CPI inflation rose to 9% in April and as China’s manufacturing sector returned to business following a series of strict lockdown measures.
‘The most painful week because of the pump so far’
Commenting on spiraling fuel costs, AA president Edmund King said: “High streets have been reeling with families cutting back during this cost of living crisis.
“With the cost of petrol soaring, shopping costs are costing £23m a day to fill up.
“Worse worse, as the holiday season approaches, UK tourism will see millions of pounds of potential visitor spending lost due to higher petrol costs in previous spots. This is the week. biggest headache ever for drivers.”
