In a reliability survey published last November, Consumer ReportsElectric SUVs have been named the least reliable vehicle category. Now CR followed that up with a report shed light on specific problem areas.
On average, electric vehicles had a significantly higher breakdown rate than internal combustion vehicles in the 2019 and 2020 model years. CR’s data. That has improved somewhat for 2021, but certain models still show high problem rates, according to the report.
The report says the most popular areas for EVs are “automotive electronics, noise and leakage, electrical equipment, climate systems, body hardware, powertrain and paint and equipment mind”.

A specific example of an “in-car electronics” error is a blank display on 2019 Audi E-Tron models, while problems with the exterior door lights on the same model constitute a problem. try “electrical equipment”.
The report also points to “powertrain” problems with the 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV including “electrical failure, transmission replacement, and other defective components.”
Other examples involving Tesla vehicles range from a faulty temperature sensor on the 2020 Model S, to loose trim and mismatched paint on the 2020 Model Y. CR indicate the latter for “much worse than average“reliability last year.

Survey respondents also reported issues with sealing and weathering in the 2020 Model X, which can cause water leaks and wind noise. Model X doors have present problems at the outset. In 2016, CEO Elon Musk said he was “not sure anyone should build or design this car because it’s so hard to build.”
In any case, the important point is not only that these problems occur, but that they occur at a higher rate than in comparable internal combustion vehicles. Though, CR found high owner satisfaction rates, suggesting that many electric vehicle owners aren’t overly worried about reliability issues.
The same 2021 reliability survey also found that hybrids and plug-in hybrids cost less to maintain and repair. CR also notes that “most of these vehicles are built on proven systems”, which can be an advantage when it comes to reliability.
