Commercial Bollinger EVs use batteries from Michigan’s ONE


Bollinger Motors will source battery packs for its commercial electric vehicles from Michigan-based startup Our Next Energy (ONE), Bollinger announced Thursday in a press release.

Bollinger plans to use ONE’s Aries line, which includes cell-to-pack technology and a modular design that allows multiple packages to be linked together, as an obvious alternative to module exclusive package that Bollinger reveals in 2021.

The Bollinger is now slated to start production by the end of 2023 with a Class 4 chassis cabin that can be configured with one or two packages. This is followed by a Class 5 platform for walking vans. The company also plans to offer Class 6 vehicles, possibly after the introduction of Class 4 and Class 5 models.

The rollout was delayed slightly, as Bollinger said in March 2021 that it would deliver the first cars in 2022. At the time, Bollinger also said that its chassis will start at $55,000 and offer battery packs up to 402 kWh. Some of that may also change with recent Bollinger sell to Mullen Cars.

Either way, Bollinger’s EVs may qualify for generous commercial truck offers through the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). It includes a credit of up to $7,500 for commercial vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of less than 14,000 pounds, and credit up to $40,000 for larger vehicles such as pickup trucks and garbage trucks.

Meanwhile, ONE also plans to demonstrate a package of chemical mixes that could push the BMW iX to 600 miles range. That technology is called Gemini and will arrive in 2026, the company says, leveraging anode-free chemistry alongside LFP cells.
