Colombia: At least five people died, including a three-year-old, while standing in a bullfight | World News

At least five people are reported dead and 70 injured after a grandstand toppled during a bullfight in Colombia.

The incident happened in the city of El Espinal in the central part of the country at around 1pm local time on Sunday during a local festival.

Among the dead was a three-year-old boy.

Footage has emerged of a wooden stand packed with spectators collapsing at the stadium.

The stands are seen pouring towards the front of the ring, where people are taking part in a bull run event, which is tied to the feast of Saints Peter and Saint Paul.

According to Major Luis Fernando Velez, the province’s civil defense director, no one is still trapped in the rubble.

He told local media that some people were missing but were found.

“The state of emergency has been resolved at the site of the incident. More than 70 people were injured,” Mr. Velez said.

The injured were taken to the nearby cities of Ibague and Maelgar by ambulance.

Mr. Velez said El Espinal’s hospital was overwhelmed, adding that he did not know what the rack was made of but it appeared to be wooden planks.

Saint Peter and Saint Paul’s Day is celebrated every year on June 29, and the event is a holiday honoring two martyrs of the Christian faith.
