Classic Mini Electric Scooter “Plug and Play” Kit starts at under $20,000

UK company Electrogen is launching an EV conversion kit for the classic Mini, which the company claims will attach directly.

Due to go on sale this fall, the kit will retail for £15,000—or about $19,000 at current exchange rates—not including the cost of a sponsor car. Keep in mind that $30,000 is generally considered an understandable number for an electric vehicle conversion, which, if you don’t take into account the sponsor’s vehicle, is a relative bargain.

Electrogen’s kit includes only a 20 kWh battery pack with an estimated 80-mile range, which is acceptable, but that might be enough for a city car like the Mini. An extended range version, with additional battery modules in the trunk, is also in development. The included electric motor delivers 60 hp.

Electrogen has verified with Green Car Reports that the kit will include any charging ports suitable for the local market. And it turns out that there are several partners in the United States

The company has previously designed electric conversions of other classic vehicles such as the Citroën DS and Land Rover Defender, and like those conversions, the Mini EV kit is designed to fit the existing vehicle structure. . The parts for sale were pre-assembled on a new subframe that bolted to the existing vehicle. In addition, installers only need to connect some wires for the throttle and control panel, according to Electrogenic. The conversion is also fully reversible, the company claims.

Enthusiasts looking for a true electric Mini have a few options—but most aren’t simple or affordable. Small charger are also converting older Minis into electric vehicles under the auspices of the modern Mini brand, but the scheme is only available in the UK and costs much more. An electric car-savvy YouTuber has created an electric Mini Cooper for under $3,000hands-on, but it involves some complicated methods and a lot of personal labor.

Those who don’t like the classic design can also get a modern electric Mini from the factory. The Mini Cooper SE only $30,750 new for the 2023 model, though the base version can be hard to find. Mini just last week pointed out that a redesigned version of the Electric Mini Cooper is on the road. It will probably be considered a 2025 model in the US
