A busy stretch of golf continues on the PGA Tour this week as players head to TPC Craig Ranch for the 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson. Coming to the par-71 format for the fourth time in tournament history, players will expect ideal scoring conditions and plenty of birdies with the winning margin likely to reach under 30.

Last year, it was Jason Day who emerged victorious as the Australian returned to the winner’s circle for the first time in more than five years. Now he hopes to become the first golfer since KH Lee in 2022 to defend his Byron Nelson title

Day leads a large international team that includes Adam Scott, Min Woo Lee, Sungjae Im and several Dallas area residents including Tom Kim and Si Woo Kim. The Kims aren’t the only local team taking part in the tournament; Native Texas native Jordan Spieth will also be on the field.

Spieth entered the Byron Nelson, a tournament where he made his PGA Tour debut as a high school junior weeks ago, without being in great form. Even though the game is tough for him, Spieth should take advantage of the opportunity to play at home, especially since he almost won the tournament a few years ago.

While two weeks still separate the players from the season’s second major championship, the CJ Cup Byron Nelson will be the final call to prepare for some when next week’s Wells Fargo Championship bows. welcoming a limited field to Quail Hollow for a signature event.

Byron Nelson field odds at the 2024 CJ Cup

  • Jordan Spieth (14-1): The hometown boy has come close to taking down Byron Nelson but has yet to add the trophy to his mantle. Spieth has found some juice since the tournament moved to TPC Craig Ranch; he broke into the top 10 in his first attempt and finished runner-up behind KH Lee in 2022. What he does this time is anyone’s guess as his form is not steady and his wrists were making him nag. In his last seven starts, Spieth has one top-10, three misses and one disqualification. He needs to find something in his game and fast.
  • Si Woo Kim (16-1)
  • Jason Day (January 20): The reigning champion has struggled since claiming his second Byron Nelson crown. While he had some quality results over the past year, Day struggled with some consistency and came to TPC Craig Ranch looking for something specific in his iron play. The former world No. 1 has lost four strokes on approach in four of his last five starts but has been backed up by a strong effort from the putting stroke. If he hopes to keep up this birdie streak, Day will need to get more out of those scoring clubs.
  • Adam Scott (22-1)
  • Byung Hun An (January 25)
  • Alex Noren (25-1)
  • Lee Min Woo (25-1): It hasn’t been the best first season on the PGA Tour for Lee, but he’s shown the signs. He arrives in Texas after a quality Masters start where he hit his driver brilliantly and found a bit of something with the irons. If those clubs continue to cooperate, Lee should have his way with the open nature of TPC Craig Ranch. He missed just once in 2024 but only cracked the top 20 – finishing runner-up at the Cognizant Classic in early March.
  • Sungjae Im (January 28): I’ve had a rough start to 2024, but he could be back on an upward trajectory after a quick trip to his native South Korea. The 26-year-old picked up a win on the Korean Tour and continued a mini-breakthrough with solid play that included a T12 at the RBC Heritage. His play sets up well for TPC Craig Ranch, but between four straight weeks of action and world travel, it could be a tough ask.
  • Tom Hoge (28-1)
  • Tom Kim (28-1): Kim seems to be aiming for the type of player who has racked up three wins early in his PGA Tour career. His iron play shined at Augusta National, where he finished with a final-round 66, and he carried this to Hilton Head, where he finished T18. This marks Kim’s third appearance in this tournament after finishing T17 in his debut and T34 a season ago.
