Cincinnati Masters: World No. 1 Swiatek lost to Keys

American Madison Keys beat world number one Iga Swiatek 6-3, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Masters on Thursday.

Swiatek, a two-time Grand Slam champion, has failed to make it past the round of 16 in four tournaments since winning Roland Garros in June.

The win was Keys’ first game of 24th in six games against an upperclassman. She has never beaten a No. 1 player in a set.

After dropping the first set and losing the first five games of the second, Swiatek rallied to win four in a row, fighting a match point before Keys won with a favorable winner. hand on the advertising field with a shot that cuts the net.

Swiatek won his first two games against the Keys, including 6-1, 6-0 earlier in the year at Indian Wells.

“Obviously, there have been a few games where I have the right score,” Keys said in an on-field interview. “She beat me pretty badly the last time we competed, so I’m happy to have won.”

Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova advanced to the women’s quarterfinals with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 victory over Wimbledon 2022 finalist and fifth seed Ons Jabeur.

Number one Daniil Medvedev advanced to the quarterfinals with a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Denis Shapovalov. Medvedev is trying to knock out last week’s second-round loss to Nick Kyrgios in Montreal and hone his game for the upcoming US Open.

Eleventh seed Taylor Fritz became the first to reach the quarterfinals, beating sixth seed Andrey Rublev, 6-7 (4), 6-2, 7-5.
