Chery will return to Australia in the first half of 2023 in small quantities omoda 5 crossover, with a base price of less than $40,000 to drive and a seven-year warranty.
It will arrive here first in base and EX trim levels, powered by a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder mated to a continuously variable transmission.
Chery said if you book the car now, the waiting time is 80 days. The first allocation has arrived in Australia.
In the second half of 2023, the range will expand to include the EX+ and EX+ AWD with a more powerful turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
An electric version of omoda 5 will launch in the first half of 2024. A plug-in hybrid version has also been discussed.
While the Omoda 5 doesn’t have any local suspension tuning, the company says it’s open to doing so in the future to improve the car.
The company says the Omoda 5 is its first truly global model, developed simultaneously in left and right hand drive and compared with Mazda CX-30, Hyundai Kona And Toyota C-HR.
The Chery range will expand beyond Omoda 5 in the second half of 2023, with Tiggo 7 Pro And Tiggo 8 Pro. The former will use a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine and the second a turbocharged 2.0-liter, both mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
The range will be sold through a network of at least 40 dealers nationwide, with additional regional dealers to be added.
Chery said they are targeting more than 8% of the total market in each category they compete in. That will help the company reach sales of about 10,000 small SUVs.

Unlike the J1 and J11 from Chery’s last run in Australia, which only received three and two-star ANCAP ratings respectively, the Omoda 5 received five stars from Euro NCAP. That suggests ANCAP might as well give it five stars.
Chery says the Omoda 5 will have 16 active safety and driver assistance features, though it didn’t detail which features will be available.
