Back in 2010, it seemed Chevy Volt prepared to hit America with a hurricane. The premise is solid: A couple of hours plugged in overnight will get the Volt driver about 35 or 40 miles (depending on how it’s driven, GM said to drive electric vehicles 25 to 50 miles per day; much for the average commute. Once the battery exhausted, an efficient gasoline engine kicks in to keep things running smoothly. No range worries, no thinking, no fuss.
And it works exactly like advertised, too. I tested a new Volt on my own shortly after its launch, and in a week of driving that included running around my neighborhood and running a few hours on the highway to cross the Phoenix area, I hit more than average. 100 miles per gallon of gas. Even including the amount of electricity I pumped into the battery pack, the Volt is easily the most efficient highway vehicle I’ve experienced up to that point, and it’s really fun to ride. drive.
The second generation Volt debuted in 2016 with many improvements, including more electric range and higher efficiency. We lament its retreat from the market back in 2019 when Synthetic engine decided to unplug, literally and figuratively, about the Volt experiment. But even for current funds, the Volt is an extremely attractive option.
The closest competitor that offers a similar ownership experience to the Volt would be Toyota Prius Prime. Between those two things, Chevy To be better to drive, more efficient for most drivers and, although looks are of course subjective, in my opinion, more attractive no matter what generation of Volt you compare them to. Of course, the Volt has been on the market a little longer than the Prius Prime. It’s not hard to find an older Volt with around 100,000 miles for under $10,000 or one with significantly less mileage for just $1,000 or so. That looks to me like an incredible bargain for a solid car. And while I fully expect the Prius Prime to be reliable, the same is true of the Volt, which has solid reliability and cross-board satisfaction scores from rating agencies.
It should also be recalled that a powertrain very similar to the Volt was used in the Cadillac ELR, a sparkling two-door coupe equipped with all the luxuries you’d expect from a car wearing the Garland and Disc. Those don’t sell for as low as the Volt, with a 2014 model book value hovers around $23,000 right now. The 2016 upgraded version is a bit more expensive. Either way, ELR could be a potential collector’s item – it was overpriced when new, meaning very little was sold and quirky pieces sometimes gaining traction after a few decades have passed.
If you’re looking for an ultra-efficient vehicle that doesn’t quite mind the available charging plugs and is looking for a deal, the Chevy Volt deserves some scrutiny.
