Chevrolet Silverado EV Work Truck tow, load confirmation

General Motors on Monday released updated traction and payload figures for the Chevrolet Silverado EV 2024 WT (work truck) and confirmed a higher base price than expected for the fleet-oriented model.

According to updated specs, the Silverado EV WT will produce 510 horsepower and 615 lb-ft of torque, giving it 10,000 pounds of maximum towing capacity and 1,440 pounds of maximum payload. Those numbers are roughly the same as the high-end RST model—also estimated to have a 10,000-pound towing capacity, with a 1,300-pound payload capacity—than originally thought.

GM says it will also launch a fleet model with a towing capacity of up to 20,000 pounds, achieved with an additional towing package, at a future date.

The update comes weeks after GM announced a 450-mile range for the Silverado EV WT. The automaker mentioned a 400-mile range when Silverado EV shown for the first time at CES 2022, but claimed the additional range was unlocked through further testing. However, the 450-mile figure is still an estimate, with full EPA testing coming closer to the truck’s sale date.

That day will come later this year, with the WT models making their debut at Factory Zero in Hamtramck, Michigan. In the future, Silverado EV will be sourced from GM Orion Assembly Plantcurrently building the Chevy Bolt EV and Bolt EUV, but is being reassigned to build the Silverado EV and its products GMC Sierra Electric Scooter sibling.

However, while GM originally mentioned a base price of $39,900, the first Silverado EV models will cost much more. Production will begin with the 450-mile version, followed by the 350-mile version, of the WT fleet model priced at $79,800 and $74,800 respectively. The no-frills WT models seem to be more likely to receive a lower base price, but the price increase is in line with rival Ford, which has repeatedly raised the price of the F-150 Lightning. The professional lightning fleet model now start around $60,000.

The first Silverado EV variant aimed at individual consumers will follow the WT models in the fall of 2023. This will be the RST First Edition with a 400-mile range and a $105,000 base price. A Trail Boss terrain model and additional WT variants will be available in calendar year 2024.

At that time, Chevy will also likely face competition from 2025 Ram 1500 REPLACEMENT. Ram is targeting a 500-mile range with a massive 229 kWh battery pack and has promised a work-oriented Tradesman model will be available to retail customers as well as fleet customers, although the battery type large may not be on that sample.
