Chevrolet Camaro banished, but the name will return…someday

The chevrolet camaro are currently racing, although the company promises “this is not the last chapter for the nameplate”.

Chevrolet has not confirmed when the Camaro name will return or if it will still be used exclusively on two-door vehicles.

ONE reported at the end of last year claims GM is considering turning Camaro into a sub-brand with a pair of all-electric three- and five-door coupes, the latter of which could be joined by an EV sports car based on the architecture. similar to the Corvette EV.

Production of the sixth-generation Camaro at the company’s Lansing, Michigan plant will end in January 2024.

The original Camaro first came out in 1966, a few years later Ford Mustang. While the two cars had been head-to-head for decades, the Camaro was put on hold in 2002 after discontinuing production of the fourth-generation model.

It worked back in 2009 when a classic themed model was launched based on the Zeta platform developed by Holden for goods limit.

The current Camaro was launched in 2015 and is based on the Alpha rear-wheel drive architecture primarily used by a number of Cadillac models.

Engines available in the current Camaro include a 205-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, a 250-hp 3.6-liter V6 and a 339-horsepower 6.2-liter V8.

The most advanced ZL1 has a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 that delivers 485 hp and 881 Nm to the rear wheels.

In honor of the Camaro’s passing, the company will soon launch a Camaro Collectible Edition in the RS, SS and ZL1.

Chevrolet hasn’t revealed what it will include in these North American-only Collector’s Editions, but said it will refer to the development codename of the first-generation vehicle: the Panther.

The Collector’s Edition Camaros will be available to order from the northern summer.

In its home country, sales of the Camaro have dropped dramatically. Since the beginning of this decade, it has failed to achieve sales of 30,000 units, with only 24,652 units sold in 2022.

However, Camaro’s decline is not isolated. The Ford Mustang also saw a similar drop, albeit from a higher base, and only sold 44,332 units last year.

The other member of the carriage trio, the Dodge Challenger, has really managed to hold steady over the past decade, and due to the steep decline of its rivals, actually finished in first place in the year. last year with sales of 55,245 units.

The Camaro is officially on sale in Australia between 2018 and 2020, with conversion work done by Holden Special Vehicles.

When new, the Camaro SS with its 6.2-liter V8 and eight-speed automatic transmission started at nearly $86,000 before on-road costs. That puts it at a serious disadvantage against the Ford Mustang, which is factory-built with right-hand drive.

For comparison, a Mustang with a 5.0-liter V8 and a 10-speed automatic starts at more than $66,000 before hitting the road. Predictable sales reflect price differences.
