A long and small summer of golf is drawing to a close for PGA Tour players as they head to Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, for the 2022 Charles Schwab Competition. In the event’s 77th game, competitors from last week’s PGA Championship can see the host venue has similar features to Southern Hills.

Last year’s runner-up, Jordan Spieth, described Southern Hills as “A Colony on Steroids”, which makes some sense since both golf courses were designed by renowned architect Perry Maxwell. Curiously, Colonial will also undergo Gil Hanse’s rehabilitation; however that won’t happen until the completion of the 2023 Charles Schwab Challenge.

While similarities can be drawn between the two properties, that does not mean that there are no differences. In recent years, Colonial has found a way to reward golf’s top strikers by looking at the past success stories of Jason Kokrak, Daniel Berger, Collin Morikawa and Xander Schauffele.

A shorter venue by PGA Tour standards, the main defense takes the form of a narrow laneway, tight tree-lined corridors, and dog-headed holes. With PGA 2022 champion Justin Thomas, Spieth and other members of the golf world winning last month, more of the same is likely to go on sale this weekend.

Let’s take a closer look at this week’s 2022 Charles Schwab Challenge with odds offered via Caesars Sportsbook.

2022 Charles Schwab Challenge field, odds

  • Scottie Scheffler (10-1): The PGA Championship miss was a surprise, but make no mistake, Scheffler remains the world No. A fallout is inevitable in his harsh springtime, but Colonial should be a comfortable stop back for residents of the Dallas-Fort Worth area. In two appearances, he failed to break into the top 50; However, he has never been in his current form.
  • Justin Thomas (12-1): When JT gets hot tempered, he tends to be scorching hot. I’m talking about the stove top type temperature, which you can’t help but touch as if you were a kid who doesn’t know any better. Could his PGA Championship win be the start of a run like 2017 when he won four tournaments, including his first PGA championship and Tour championship? I wouldn’t bet against it.
  • Jordan Spieth (January 14): “Sloppy” might best describe Spieth’s Grand Slam attempt at the Southern Hills as he never gave himself a chance and eventually ended up drawing 34th. Coincidentally, that same word could be used to record his final lap in last year’s Charles Schwab Challenge when he fell in a two-man race against Jason Kokrak.
  • Collin Morikawa (January 16)
  • Viktor Hovland (18-1)
  • Will Zalatoris (20-1): The Texans can see their PGA championship as a half-baked situation. All in all, it’s his second playoff loss of the season as he’s still without a win on the PGA Tour. On the other hand, it was his 5th time finishing in the top 10 after only his 8th time taking part in the major championship. Zalatoris is earning a reputation as a big game hunter and it’s totally worth it.
  • Max Homa (January 25)
  • Sam Burns (January 28)
  • Abraham Ancer (35-1): If Ancer posts a round in the reds on Sunday in the Southern Hills, he’s at least joined Thomas and Zalatoris in a playoff. He lost in the final shuffle but once again fully performed in a major championship and has the statistical record to thrive at Colonial.
  • Daniel Berger (35-1)
  • Tommy Fleetwood (35-1)
  • Tony Finau (35-1)
  • Sungjae Im (35-1)
