Changing the way we eat, ‘major accelerator’ towards 2030 development goals: UN Deputy Secretary-General

The so-called Timeline of the United Nations Food System Inventory is the first global tracking for a summit in 2021 summoned to change the way the world produces, consumes, and thinks about food.

High level events fall in half point to obtain 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and 17 Sustainable Development (SDGs), providing a blueprint for a fairer, more equitable and “greener” world.

Improving lives and livelihoods

“I expect the Italian leadership to bring the stakeholders together to create proof that Food system transformation is an important SDG acceleratorspeak Ms. Mohammed emphasized that “more sustainable, equitable, healthy and resilient food systems will have a direct impact on people’s lives and livelihoods as we strive for a better future for people and for the planet.”

During Inventory Time, countries will share success stories and early signs of transformation, while maintaining the momentum needed to ensure food systems are resilient.

It will take place from 24 to 26 July at the headquarters of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).FAO) in the Italian capital.

Italy will organize, in collaboration with FAO and two other UN agencies – the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Food Program (WFP) – also based in Rome.

The United Nations Food System Coordination Centerorganizations that assist governments in developing and implementing transformation of agricultural systems, and by extension the United Nations system, are also the organizers.

Contribution and challenge

The three-day meeting will provide an opportunity for countries to report on progress made since UN Food System Summit in September 2021, held online, where more than 50,000 people, including 77 world leaders, pledged to accelerate transformational action.

Italy held its previous summit in Rome in July of that year.

At Census Time, governments will also evaluate their contributions to achieving sustainable development despite the significant change in the current global landscape.

The United Nations reports that the number of people worldwide who cannot afford a healthy diet has increased 112 million more from 2019 to 2020, to nearly 3.1 billion, reflecting the impact of food price increases over the period COVID-19 pandemic.

Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani, who is also Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, said Italy welcomes the role of host and co-host.

“Italy, with the strategic involvement of a strong and innovative agri-food sector, is committed to playing an increasingly active role in supporting the efforts of the international community to promote food security and innovative and innovative solutions for sustainable and efficient food systems around the world, he said.

“As one of the oldest and most influential food cultures in the world, we intend to contribute to solving one of the key challenges to achieving our goal. Agenda 2030.”

‘Seize the opportunity’

The inventory moment will further highlight the central role of food system transformation in the overall SDG progress before Summit on Sustainable Development Goals in September.

The United Nations and Italy call on countries and stakeholders to “prepare and seize the opportunity” to reaffirm their global commitment to urgent action, in line with their commitments on the SDGs.
