Every day in our house is Celebrating Livestock Day (just ask our two dogs and three cats – all former residents of the shelter) but we can all really stop in every December for this one-day event .
When to celebrate Livestock Day?
Welcoming Pets Day is celebrated on December 5 every year. This pet holiday began in 2010 as a joint project of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and Maddie’s Foundation, to celebrate the day that pet owners share photos on social media.
First known as Shelter Pets Take Over Facebook Day, the day was invented as a fun way for people to showcase their adopted pets – it then hopefully encourages more people to consider taking pet adoption.

Easy ways to improve your dog photos
It’s time to get those photos ready for the Temporary Pet Day Celebration! We have some tips to help you create beautiful and happy photos of your dog.
A few years ago we co-hosted a #SuperDogPics party with All Things Dog Blog. Our expert guests for the party are Life + Dog publisher Brett Chisholm, a professional photographer, who shares her tips for improving your own dog photos, whatever your device.
We wanted to share some of our favorites from his many tips.
- TIP: The light is softest and most even in the shade or on cloudy days. Direct, overhead sun is not optimal.
We love this lighting tip, which is especially relevant during the winter months.
- TIP: A wide aperture is also essential for shooting indoors with natural light.

- TIP: We’ll say it again. Natural, filtered light is best. Get close to the window!
We love this lighting tip because it requires no special equipment and it applies no matter what type of camera you’re using:
- TIP: When using a mobile phone, focus on bright areas to darken the photo / dark areas to brighten before shooting.
Finally, this last tip applies to almost everyone these days as we are all carrying around phones with great cameras! (And, after all, the best camera is the one you have with friend!)
