Canelo Alvarez signs three-fight contract with top boxing champion
Canelo Alvarez is gone again.
Multiple outlets are reporting that the super-middleweight champion has signed a three-fight contract with the Premier Boxing Champion, who has the top 168-pound boxers under contract.
Matches will take place at typical times of the year for the Mexican star, which is next September, May and September next year.
Jermall Charlo, a 160-pound PBC boxer, is said to be a top contender to be Alvarez’s next opponent but that has yet to be decided.
David Benavidez, Demetrius Andrade, David Morrell and Kyrone Davis are among the PBC’s other 168-pound athletes who would be Alvarez’s potential enemies.
Charlo has not competed since June 2021 and will have to be promoted but the undefeated boxer is seen as a real threat to Alvarez. Meanwhile, fans are clamoring to see Alvarez face off against the fearsome Benavidez, who is tipped to take on Morrell.
Alvarez (59-2-2, 39 KOs) left longtime promotion agency Golden Boy Promotions in the fall of 2020 and has been a free agent ever since, working with both PBC and Matchroom Boxing.
The 32-year-old future Hall of Famer plans to face 175-pound champion Dmitry Bivol in a rematch in September. However, the parties could not come to an agreement. Bivol overtook Alvarez last May.
Alvarez last fought on May 6, when he easily overcame John Ryder.
