Every dog parent knows that time spent with your dog is the best medicine. Whether you’re sick, sad, or exhausted, petting and cuddling your dog can instantly lift your spirits. It’s not just the opinion of some dog lovers, many doctors have even observed this themselves.
This theory becomes especially apparent when cancer patient Flavio Santos is missing her beloved dog, Agadir. So the staff arranged for Agadir to visit his father, and the response was even more amazing than anyone could have predicted.
Agadir’s surprise visit
Santos was in São José Memorial Hospital for weeks, and it started driving him crazy. He cannot leave because he is still undergoing cancer treatment. The nurses probably knew that the situation was difficult for Santos, so they planned a surprise visit for him.
The hospital staff arranged for Agadir to come to the hospital to surprise Santos. When the day finally came, it was the most beautiful reunion ever. Both Agadir and Santos are overjoyed to see each other again after a long separation.
Without hesitation, Agadir jumped on his father’s lap and kissed him. Santos was so happy that he burst into tears of joy. Agadir is a loyal family member to him, so Santos is happy to be reunited with the puppy again. For both Santos and Agadir, it was the best day since Santos was hospitalized.
However, the staff soon learned that this was more than just an emotional visit. They have seen proof that dogs make our lives better.
Dogs are the best medicine
After Santos spent some fun time with his little dog, doctors noticed changes in his health. His overall outlook suddenly looks better than expected. The only change in his routine is meeting Agadir.
Dr. Rodrigo Tancredi said that Santos started talking more, and he seemed to be more conscious and oriented. All because his dog helped lift his spirits. The doctor says that from what he has observed while working in the medical field, dogs do indeed have psychological and physical benefits to humans.
“We clearly saw his improvement the day before. Dr Tancredi said.
After Agadir’s visit, doctors assumed that Santos would be able to leave the hospital earlier than planned. This is the first time they have allowed a dog to visit, but because of the positive results, it is likely that they will allow more dogs in the future. Hopefully Santos will recover quickly so he can be back with Agadir soon!
