High-quality zoom lenses are expensive, often running over $2,000, and as such, most of us are always looking to get more out of what we already own. The idea of doubling your zoom range with an affordable 2x teleconverter is certainly appealing, but does it work in practice? This excellent video review looks at the situation of Sony shooters.

In addition to losing two stops of aperture, you’ve traditionally sacrificed autofocus performance and image quality with a teleconverter (especially with the more extreme 2x model). In this case, though, the loss of aperture essentially puts you in line with a 100-400mm lens, and more importantly, the autofocus performance is pretty impressive (it certainly surprised me). On the other hand, you also have to consider whether the loss of sharpness is acceptable for your work, but overall I am quite impressed and quite surprised by how well the teleconverter performs. any.
