Consumer zoom lenses have come a long way in the past five years or so. In the past, if you wanted professional-grade sharpness, you’d need to pick up a top-of-the-line super-photo prime lens, which typically costs over $10,000. While you can now get incredible image quality from consumer zoom lenses like the aforementioned Canon model, there’s nothing wrong with the physics of the apertures and unless you shell out the highest amount for one of those super photographic primes, you’ll be stuck with a relatively narrow maximum aperture.
