Jockey David Cabrera suffered a broken femur in a spill during the seventh race at Remington Park Sept. 21. The rider appeared to lose his left stirrup iron in the final sixteenth aboard the Steve Asmussen-trained Outlining in a one-mile turf allowance race and was unseated.
Cabrera was immediately taken to the University of Oklahoma Medical Center in Oklahoma City, Okla., after the race. Outlining was apprehended by an outrider and walked off in good order.
The jockey’s agent, Jose Santos Jr., reported Friday morning via X, formerly known as Twitter, that the rider would “be out for a while” but was “in good spirits and resting in the hospital with his family by his side.”
“We are upset, but feel fortunate that it wasn’t worse,” Santos continued. “He will be back.”
Cabrera, the leading rider at Remington from 2018-2021, was second in the jockey standings at the time of his fall.
The agent wrote in his most recent update on X that Cabrera would be going into surgery Friday at 1 p.m. CT.
A multiple graded stakes-winning jockey, Cabrera has won 1,708 races and bankrolled $44,381,695 in his riding career.
