“That happens sometimes midterms,” he said. “There’s no denying that it’s a set of outcomes that we have to look at carefully and learn from,” he said.
“What we have to do, as it’s been before, where we see the by-election go one way and then the next general election go a very different way, you can’t extrapolate … the by-election result into a general election result.
“It’s been proven time and time again not to work that way.”
Rallying Mr Johnson’s support, he said: “One of the things we’ve seen over the last few days is his passion and enthusiasm to give back to the country.
“I think Boris Johnson is the right man to put us in the next general election. I think he’ll do it successfully.”
He added: “He’s proven it time and time again, where people have eliminated him, both before the London election and before the 2019 election, and then we can come back and win, and win successfully. And I think he has the ability to do that.”
Mr. Lewis said that the Prime Minister looking at the long term is an asset.
“What I see is someone with drive and enthusiasm for what we want to achieve for our country,” he said.
“Having the ability to look ahead is a good thing.
“This is someone who I think has the potential to win a general election, to the benefit of our country.”
He added: “What I want is a prime minister who is not thinking about the next few months, but he is thinking about the lasting change that we need in our country.
“I’m very clear. I want our country to have a Conservative-led government for a very long time.
“I want a prime minister who looks to the long term and does so with enthusiasm and focus.
“That’s what we have in Boris Johnson and that’s why I support him, and will continue to.”
