BYD Shark price leaked: Hybrid pickup will cost less than mid-range Ranger and HiLux

The BYD Shark 2025 Plug-in Hybrid Pickup Truck will cost the same as the Ford Ranger XLT V6 when it launches in Australia, according to figures released by a government database.

Figures published on the government website for the “2025 Z Utility Shark Base 4×4” model show a variant of the dual-cab PHEV pick-up will cost $68,000 before on-road costs.

Although the listing says “Base”, it’s possible that this price is for a more luxurious variant in the range with more options. BYD’s local distributor has confirmed that prices will be announced in October, allowing time for the figures to be adjusted.

A list price of $68,000 will put the Shark in line with midsize cars. Ford Ranger XLT 4×4 V6 ($68,840 on-road price) and Toyota HiLux Rogue with V-Active Technology (price before rolling is $ 71,530).

We’ve reached out to BYD Australia and its local distributor for comment on the pricing leak and will update this article if either party makes a statement.

The Shark is powered by a plug-in hybrid powertrain with a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine, two electric motors and a Blade battery pack.

Figures from China show the Shark is 5457mm long, 1971mm wide, 1925mm high and has a wheelbase of 3260mm.

The 320kW plug-in hybrid powertrain consists of a 170kW/310Nm electric motor at the front and a 150kW/340Nm electric motor at the rear.

The car can hit 100km/h in 5.7 seconds. Equipped with a 30kWh battery, the electric range is said to be 100km on the NEDC test cycle – a figure also listed on the government website.

With just full acceleration, the Shark can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 5.7 seconds.

The PHEV system’s claimed combined range is 850km and fuel consumption is as low as 1.5 litres per 100km on a full battery charge.

Payload is 835kg, rear tray has a capacity of 1450 litres and braked towing capacity is 2500kg. Ground clearance is 282mm.

Inside, the Shark gets a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

Available tech features include a surround-view camera system, a head-up display, wireless smartphone charging, an air filtration system and wireless key functionality for Apple iPhone users.

The BYD Shark won’t have much competition in Australia, although the best-selling Ford Ranger will get a plug-in hybrid option in early 2025.
