Failure! AMG GT prototype goes astray in an attempt to burn Goodwood

A driver of a Mercedes-AMG GT the prototype poked its nose where it didn’t belong while making donuts at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Mercedes-AMG has not yet launched 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT, but a camouflaged prototype appeared at Goodwood with colorful leather and yellow ribbons to cover the headlights and taillights. As if the wrap weren’t enough, the driver made sure to keep all eyes on the car.

A video posted to YouTube by TFJJ shows the car making donuts in an enclosed area surrounded by hay bales and fences.

The driver seems to know what they’re doing at the beginning of the video as they swing the GT like a ballet dancer.

However, they then lifted the accelerator and lost control of the vehicle at low speed, swerving straight onto a grass embankment and crashing into some hay.

Thankfully the incident didn’t cause any major damage to the vehicle – or hay. The video continues as the driver retreats to the exit.

The car has some hay stuck to the front diffuser, but otherwise it doesn’t appear to have been damaged by that embarrassing incident.

Mercedes-AMG posted a photo on Instagram with Mick Schumacher in the driver’s seat of the GT coupe, however it appears he wasn’t driving the car during the donut incident.

The same YouTube video also shows the Mercedes-AMG GT completing the hill climb at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

At the end of the video, it shows a close-up of the coupe while it’s parked in the warehouse.

The car appears to have an active rear spoiler, but otherwise former spy pictures told us everything we needed to know about it.

It looks like it’s ready for production, but Mercedes-AMG may have brought the car to the festival for testing.

Mercedes-AMG posted a teaser photo of the car on its Instagram showing a corner of the coupe.

The upcoming model will be built on the Modular Sports Architecture (MSA), shared with Mercedes-AMG SL.

While it will have a rather evolved design language compared to its predecessor, it looks like the styling at the front is a bit smoother. At the back, it has a square-shaped exhaust.

Mercedes-AMG is expected to offer a plug-in hybrid variant in the upcoming GT range. The upcoming lineup is also expected to feature a range of mild-hybrid powertrains.

It’s unclear what the interior of the new GT coupe will look like but it is said to share the same layout as its SL counterpart.

It’s not likely to have the SL’s two rear seats. The removal of the GT coupe’s two rear seats could allow Mercedes-AMG to reinforce and stiffen the aluminum MSA platform for a more race-focused setup.

Mercedes-AMG has yet to confirm what lies under the bonnet, but the GT could adopt some of the powertrains offered in the SL.

SL range opens with 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder SL 43, has a 48V mild hybrid system and produces 280kW power and 480Nm of torque. It is less likely to appear in the GT, as the car has previously been considered a halo brand.
