Burned piglets alive and cows beaten in slaughterhouse scandal – Scam! A system built to fight animals


The public has been misled into believing that the UK government has systems in place to “protect” domestic animals. Filmed over a 200-hour period, the Animal Justice Project by break the investigation, as seen in Time, exposing the cruel violence inflicted on innocent animals in the final moments of their lives.

The Animal Justice Project’s two-month secret footage, obtained from the family-owned slaughterhouse, G. & GB Hewitt, Cheshire, shows animal cruelty and negligence by staff. , including the abattoir director, Mark Hewitt. Animals are illegally tortured in front of an Official Veterinarian appointed by the Food Standards Agency and a slaughterhouse CCTV camera, which does not prevent illegal activities.

Petrified bulls, frightened sheep and tiny piglets have suffered unimaginable cruelty within the walls of Hewitt.

The ‘spent’ dairy cows – no longer considered profitable by the industry – are sadly lame in captivity. A pair of gentle bulls shocked in the ‘trough’ with an electric jack and a pointed stick when they had nowhere else to go. They were stabbed more than 200 times when they froze in fear. This sad attack went on for 40 long minutes and leading to the shooting of panicked animals.

This sickening sighting demonstrates multiple violations of Animal Welfare at the Time of Killing (WATOK) law, undermining UK law. The law clearly states that animals cannot be intentionally scared or mistreated during movement and that workers must stop electrocuting if animals do not respond.

Slaughterhouse manager disturbingly catches sheep and restrains them when they got his throat cut without any dizziness. Fighting for their freedom, the suffering sheep were dragged into the killing room by their horns. Many people are stunned for two seconds and the item is damaged multiple times. Pulling these nervous animals with their horns is yet another violation of WATOK, further testament to the slaughterhouse of blatant disregard for the law. WATOK guidelines state that animals should not be lifted or pulled with their head, ears, horns, or wool in a manner that could cause pain or distress.

Recently stolen from their mother and taken to the slaughterhouse, where they met a callous end, merciless little piglet at Hewitt. Innocent children were stunned by electric clamps in turn as their friends and siblings looked on in awe. Their tiny bodies were then slid through a door, where their throats were cut. Workers failed to check for signs of life as the piglets were thrown, thrashed and convulsed, into a bloody pile.

One instance – a piglet lying below all the others on the pile – showed signs of not being stunned and ‘bleeding’. We were shocked and heartbroken to capture this tiny individual, seemingly alive, being thrown into the pool of burns. Our camera showed them thrown around in scalding water. A worker is looking back at the writhing piglet who seems to be drowning, but they ignored the excruciating pain and walked away.

Intermittent errors of gorgeous equipment, contrary to the provisions of the law, and carelessly stuns, resulting in many sheep showing obvious signs of wakefulness, even with their throats cut. Over 97% of pigs and sheep slaughtered during our filming did not have their throats cut in The Food Standards Agency recommends an allotment time of 15 seconds – another reason sheep are starting to wake up. Above four out of eight days that we filmed, the stunning equipment that failed, the animals shock before and shock in their delicate faces.

As the pigs ‘bleed’, kicked and ran, the abattoir manager started ‘dressing’ them, much earlier than the period stated in Slaughter law. The slaughterhouse’s own CCTV captures all atrocities; however, this does not prevent staff from torturing vulnerable animals. It is clear that the Food Standards Agency – the UK government’s food watchdog – is failing to protect animals.

Food Standards Agency-designated veterinarians and CCTV fail to prevent serious violations of the law.

Of these animals, only 291 non-compliant animals were reported, affecting 3,604 animals. Only 10 people were referred for investigation. For nearly 24 million animals! These figures do not include poultry.

Despite announcing its ‘Open Data’ policy in February 2021, the Food Standards Agency has rejected some Freedom of Information requests made by the Animal Justice Project on animal welfare violations in UK abattoirs over the past three years, veterinarian recorded animal welfare violations and non-compliance data from Hewitt abattoirs. FSA’s sloppy veterinarians and abattoir’s abuse of CCTV – that’s infrequently or randomly seized by regulatory authoritieshas caused animal suffering that has gone largely unseen and unreported.

But it’s important to remember: the system is not broken. It is purposefully designed to damage animals, protect profits, and perpetuate institutionalized abuse of domestic animals. An industry that exploits animals for profit cannot be trusted to protect them. Our government is at the heart of this exploitative system and our findings show that they disregard the rights of domestic animals. The public is misled into believing that our government ‘protects’ domestic animals. Now we must hold the government accountable for their actions.
