Roommates, got an update on the recent mass shooting in New York. According to AP News, Payton Gendron was indicted by a grand jury and charged with hateful domestic terrorism and 10 counts of first-degree murder. The 25-count indictment also includes counts of murder and attempted murder as a hate crime and weapons possession, which carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison.
Reports say the 18-year-old has pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors told a judge on May 20 that the grand jury voted to convict Payton. However, they did not disclose the charges, and the proceedings are still ongoing. Payton’s attorney, Brian Parker, explained that he has not seen the indictment and cannot comment. Parker also added that a judge barred prosecution and defense attorneys from discussing the case publicly.
As we reported earlier, Payton drove nearly three hours to Buffalo, New York, from his home in Conklin, New York, with the intention of killing as many Negroes as possible. On the tragic day, he walked into Tops grocery store in Buffalo, where he fatally shot 10 people with an AR-15-style rifle on May 14. Before the shooting, Payton posted uploaded documents outlining his white supremacist views online, revealing it to be a targeted attack plan that had been set up for months.
Several Rooomates shared their opinions on what form of sentencing Payton deserved. One person commented, “Honestly, just skip the test and give him the needle.” Tasha K walked in and commented, “I wish we had a firing squad in NY just for this last case.” Currently, New York does not have the death penalty, and Payton is expected to be sentenced on Thursday.
