Bringing back the era of classic digital gauges

At this point, digital gauge assemblies have long been around, but their full potential is far from realized. After all, it’s a monitor that lets you do literally anything (within reason) with it. Now I have seen and discovered the classic gauges in New Mustang 2024i say bring more classic gauge designs in digital display.

I may not even need to say that. volkswagen recently introduced a classic ruler option (below) in New ID. 2All concept cars. excavated by Daniel Golson on Twitter, the classic gauge options are meant to mimic a classic beetle VW or Mk 1 Golf. The displays are magnificent and will take anyone back in time with their authenticity. Best of all, being able to drive a modern EV (or any modern car) with vintage gauges is awesome. With the freedom that screens allow us, why don’t more manufacturers draw on the best from their legacy?

VW ID. 2All

Ford can give credit for this idea planted in everyone’s head with New Mustang. Its retrograde gauge is intended to mimic Fox Body’s gauges from 1987-1993. They have a white background in daylight, but turn green when you turn on the headlights, simulating the green backlighting of that cluster of cars. They are not only eye-catching, but also highly functional and easy to read. You can even choose to display modern data like trip data, vehicle information, etc along with it. Of course, Ford also offers a blank option, so it can be just you and your classic gauges if you want.

porsche, on the other hand, just missed the opportunity to give us the feedback measure cluster option. The Interior of the next generation Cayenne revealed yesterday, and for the first time on a gasoline-powered Porsche, the cluster is completely digital. The electric handlebar there’s also a digital, but electric, cluster, there’s basically no reason for it to have a traditional Porsche center-speed gauge – it passed.

However, the new one Cayenne no, and while the cluster is customizable with a variety of layouts (including a layout with a center pin), the classic Porsche cluster is not one of them. Few cluster designs are as iconic and instantly recognizable as the old Porsche clusters. Recreating the look of a 356 or any classic Porsche model would be a monumental design choice.

We’re sure most of you already know your favorite gauges from OEMs that you’d love to see a return to. Imagine Honda S2000icon cluster of in New R type – one of the modes is indeed part of that path, but not all. Or think about what the wild digitized cluster of the 1980s 300ZX would look like on a modern Z car. The opportunities are endless and we need more manufacturers and UX staff at those manufacturers to think this way. Bringing back the renaissance of the classic digital gauge cluster!
