Brandon Hammond steps in to talk about his classic roles, reconnecting with his old co-stars and more
#TS Where Are They Now: By now many of you must have watched at least one role, or maybe even two or three roles played by the actor. Brandon Hammond. He was on some pretty groundbreaking projects growing up in front of the camera. Years later, he has expanded his talents and has added teachers, filmmakers, and writers to his resume.
We struck up a conversation with Brandon to talk about his classic roles, such as Ahmad from “Soul food,” as well as his role as Matty Stevenson in “TMr. Gregory Hines Show,” and more.
When asked when he recognized his contributions to Black cinema and Black culture, Brandon said,
“I think that’s what I’m still realizing. I don’t think I fully know my importance or impact on the culture. I just know that I’ve been in some really addictive movies that have clearly shaped people’s lives.”
We also asked about Brandon’s relationship with the mother in the movie Vivica A. Foxand he shared that before they starred in the 1997 movie “Soul foodthey also worked together on a TV show called “Out of the Nightt,” but they didn’t have too many scenes together. However, working on “Soul Food,” is where they built a special bond they still share to this day.
When asked about his current projects, Brandon just let us know that he is currently directing a “Soul food,” the documentary about the reunion will celebrate the film’s 25th anniversary, taking place in September 2022. He said,
“During the fundraising to help get it done, but so far the cast, I’ve talked to most of them, they all agree on this. George Tillman, the writer/director, he not only agreed with it but was very excited about it. So that’s at the top of the list.
Brandon also told us about his movie.”Amaru“Awarded as the winner of the first annual contest John Singleton Short Film Competition in 2020. As well as his mentorship program and the acting classes he offers.
