You will think BMW car‘S double kidney grille can’t get much bigger, but the company could soon make a car so big that it even incorporates headlights.
BMW has filed a patent with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) as first reported by automatically expressillustrates the technology that allows the dual kidney grille to go from opaque to transparent.
According to the patent image, this theoretically means that when the headlights leave the grille it is a seamless sheet, and when the headlights are on the grille it can become transparent to let light through. .
Another possible use for this technology is with different daytime running light configurations.
It’s unclear if this patented technology is for grilles actually used in internal combustion cars or if it’s just a grille-like panel for electric vehicles (EVs). The latter does not require a conventional grille for cooling.
Similar technology was recently shown on BMW i Vision Dee concept with “phygital” – a combination of physical and digital – dual kidney grille.
This self-contained dual kidney grille and headlights can create different ‘facial’ expressions such as joy, amazement and approval.
At this stage, it remains unclear whether BMW will actually produce a car with a grille that can change from translucent to transparent and that includes the headlights.
Instead, the company could just patent the technology so that no other automaker could steal the idea.
