BMW announces next-generation voice assistant built on Amazon Alexa technology – coming within 2 years

BMW has announced that its next-generation voice assistant will be built on Alexa technology developed by Amazon. The German automaker now has its own voice assistant called Intelligent Personal Assistant (IPA)is standard on models equipped with BMW Operating System 7 as of 2018 and is also included in Operating system BMW 8. Customers can expect the first cars with BMW’s next-generation voice assistant to arrive within the next two years.

“Alexa technology will enable a more natural dialogue between the driver and the vehicle, so the driver can focus on the road. This will take the digital experience to a whole new level,” said Stephan Durach, Senior Vice President of Engineering Operations for Development and Connectivity at the BMW Group.

The Alexa Custom Assistant was unveiled last January and gives companies access to Alexa’s advanced artificial intelligence (AI) to build their own smart assistant. In addition to BMW, Stellantis is another OEM that has signed on to implement this technology in their vehicles.

According to BMW, its new voice assistant will partner with Alexa, providing customers with the benefits of an intelligent assistant who is an expert in vehicles and services. Meanwhile, Alexa provides the familiar experience many customers are using today, including the ability to control music, remotely manage their smart home, add items to a shopping list or Check the weather for the day.
