Lismore local Mali Cooper has been charged with intentionally obstructing traffic after locking herself in her car in the Sydney Harbor Tunnel during rush hour traffic in June.

Live-streaming the chaos that followed as traffic piled up on either side of her, Cooper said the reason behind the disruptive action was to make changes to the system after witnessing the devastation of the Lismore floods.

Prior to 2022, Cooper’s offense would typically maximum penalty of $440 . appliesbut after the changes to the protest law in NSW – namely designed to target climate protestors – these penalties are increased to $22,000, or jail time up to two years.

Facing these penalties in Lismore local court this morning, Cooper has been subject to all charges brought against her by the judges under a section 14 mental health order.

Are climate extremists like Cooper too delusional to face court? Arguably they are – people who truly believe the world is coming to an end may not be able to rationally assess the consequences of their actions. What act of criminal salvation would be unacceptable if the world was truly on the brink of destruction?

But the courts have a duty to protect the public, when someone’s mental decline leads them to commit a crime. Blockade Australia claims Cooper said she still believes in the climate crisis and takes direct action.

Let’s hope Cooper receives appropriate psychological treatment for her climate-related mental health issues and also hope any court-directed mental health providers intends to take steps to protect the public from her harmful behavior, otherwise there is a risk that climate extremists like Cooper could have this case fired as a free ticket to continue doing it. show off their climate warrior fantasies.

Update (EW): While researching Part 14 mental health protections, I noticed a lot of ads from New South Wales state attorneys offering expedited services, for people to request Part 14. 14 if they are caught drinking, driving, smoking or engaging in antisocial behaviour.
