BioWare introduces the return of geth in the next Mass Effect game

Yesterday was N7 Day, an annual celebration of all things Block effect, and this year is a bit quieter than last year. In 2020, BioWare revealed that they are working on a brand new game in the series, but this year, they’ve revisited the Mass Effect remake trilogy that came out in May. I thought that was all they had in store until the end of the day when they posted a new promotional poster for the next game, which features a crater shaped like a giant geth head . Geth! Mass Effect trilogy villain! Put on your goggles, readers, it’s time to investigate this photo.

So here is the whole poster (you can download it This version is here):

Full poster for Mass Effect 5. It features a large geth-shaped crater, a ship that looks like it's out of Andromeda, and four tiny figures wandering toward the crater.
“Mass Effect will continue,” it said.

And here is the geth (Legion!), for reference:

A bit too similar to be a coincidence, right? The crater even has lines on the sides that look like lense flames!

If you look closer, you can spot what looks like a corpse in the light under the “eye” area. Zoom in even more, and it looks like there’s more of a geth body (or perhaps a husk?) just below the blue of the eye. It’s too early for this to be a hard confirmation of anything, but it’s another hint (later that first trailer with Liara) that this new Mass Effect will be linked to Shepard’s trilogy – there is no geth in Mass Effect: Andromeda.

Follow the poster down a little further, and you might spot four characters heading to that dead (?) location. Most of them are pretty hard to spot, but the red hulking one is definitely a krogan. It would be great if it was Wrex. Given that we’ve seen Liara, and know that krogan and asari can live for hundreds of years, it’s very possible that both could survive long after Shepard “died” in ME3.

The final highlight of the poster is the spaceship. It looks very similar to the design of the ships in Andromeda. I also think one of those little ones is wearing the armor of the Andromeda Initiative.

Could Mass Effect 5 be where Andromeda and the trilogy meet? I like that very much. I had similar thoughts around this time last year, when BioWare released the first teaser image for the game. Andromeda is set hundreds of years after Shep’s story, and in a completely different space. But hundreds of years is not a time for some Mass Effect species.

What if the Milky Way crew had Mass Relays configured so they could travel further? What if they build or find Mass Relay in Andromeda? The possibilities! This is all speculation, of course, but these clues are starting to add to something… At least in my head. I’d love to hear your thoughts on what might happen next, readers.

If you’re interested in more of what BioWare has to offer for N7 Day, check it out their blog post Rekindled some of the excitement of this year’s Mass Effect Legendary Edition. They released a bunch of interesting stats (similar to the one from earlier this year that shows how boring 40% of players are), put a number cute Mass Effect stickers on Steam and beyond. The Legendary Edition is also discounted right now on Steam, Origin and Microsoft Store to celebrate.
