Biden nominates head of NHTSA to lead safety agency

WASHINGTON – The White House said on Monday that President Joe Biden plan to nominate the right to head National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to serve in the top job.

Ann Carlson, the agency’s chief counsel, was appointed acting director of NHTSA in September. She oversaw safety probes in Tesla and efforts to reduce the number of traffic deaths and significantly increase the means of transport energy saving request.

For nearly six years, NHTSA has had no Senate-confirmed administrator. Traffic deaths in the US have risen sharply since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Road deaths rose 10.5% in 2021 to 42,915, the highest number of road deaths in the US in a single year since 2005.

In January, Carlson said the agency was studying the impact of vehicle size on road safety and was “very concerned” about “the extent to which heavier vehicles contribute to high mortality rates.” than.”

The agency is “investing a lot of resources” into the Tesla investigation, Carlson said in January, declining to commit to a timeframe for resolving the investigation. “We’re acting as quickly as we can, but we also want to be careful and make sure we have all the information we need.”

In June, NHTSA upgraded its fault investigation into 830,000 Tesla vehicles with the Autopilot driver assistance system and involved in collisions with parked emergency vehicles.

NHTSA is looking into whether Tesla’s vehicles provide adequate guarantees for attentive drivers.

NHTSA plans to propose in April new fuel economy standards for model year 2027 and beyond, which could dramatically reshape new car on American roads, Carlson said.

In March 2020, the Republican administration of former President Donald Trump rolling reverting to standards for only a 1.5% annual increase in efficiency through 2026, much less than the 5% annual increase required by the former President Barack Obama. The Biden administration in 2021 reversed Trump’s actions and directed NHTSA and I have to go to school every day to start working on the next round of more difficult rules.
