Best phones from MWC 2022: Foldable, Budget, and more

We are here at Mobile World Congress 2022 in Barcelona, where a bunch of new devices were announced. It certainly wasn’t the biggest year for mobile phones at the event, especially for products coming out in the US. Notably missing are splashy releases by Samsung we have seen in previous years.

However, HMD Global (the maker of Nokia phones), TCL and Motorola have done their best to keep the hype about the device going. Meanwhile, a Brands like Oppo (in the absence of a big new model from sister brand OnePlus) is highlighting what’s on offer for a global audience, with the US sadly missing out on a serious competitor.

TCL has too many phones

TCL and HMD are the two brands that don’t have the strongest showing in Barcelona, with a ton of technology on the horizon. So, TCL is proud of its place in this round with two dedicated entries.

Simple phones launched from TCL come in the form of the new TCL 30 5G, TCL 30+, TCL 30, TCL 30 SE and TCL 30 E. 20 series from 2021. The big news here is the price – the most expensive is 30 5G for 249 € (about 280 US dollars) and the price drops on a scale to 30 E (139 €). US pricing and availability are yet to be confirmed, but the 30+, 30, and 30 SE are all available to purchase right now in Europe, and the other two models will be released in April.

And the specs offer good value for money. Each phone has a 50MP triple camera setup, with the exception of the TCL 30 E, which features a 50MP dual camera setup. The large screen and battery will likely appeal to many people. The TCL 30 5G, TCL 30+ and TCL 30 all have 6.7-inch FHD + AMOLED panels. The entire operating range has about a 5,000 mAh cell, which should provide a good second day of battery life.

One obvious drawback is only some of these devices are guaranteed to receive an Android OS upgrade (to Android 13) and two years of security updates.

TCL has more exotic concept phones

However, it’s not all about quantity for the TCL, with some input quality in the form of interesting concept devices. First, there’s the TCL Fold ‘n Roll. The name says it all: This phone is both foldable and rollable, allowing you to expand the screen, shrink it, and then close it.
