Don’t just talk about it, talk about it! As many continue to deal with the recent tragedy in Buffalo, New York, Civil Rights Attorney Ben Crump requested protection of African-Americans. Attorney Crump, representing the family of Ruth Whitfield, 86, has called on President Joe Biden and Congress to pass a bill to combat black hate crimes. Speaking to ABC News Live and standing next to Ruth’s children, he said, “We’re going to fight to do what they believe their mother wants. It’s to get some positive change coming out of this tragedy. He added, “That’s why we’re telling President Biden and the United States Congress, let’s pass a bill to fight black hate crimes.”
Attorney Crump has been very vocal since an act of domestic terrorism occurred Saturday that claimed the lives of ten innocent people at the hands of 18-year-old Payton Gendron. As we previously reported, Payton pleaded not guilty because he was charged with first-degree murder in the shooting. Authorities said he arrived at Tops supermarket in tactical gear and live-streamed the mass shooting using a helmet-mounted camera.
Earlier today, the names of all ten victims were released, including; Aaron Salter, 55. Ruth Whitfield, 86, Pearly Young, 77, Katherine Massey, 72, Deacon Heyward Patterson, 67, Celestine Chaney, 65, Roberta A. Drury, 32, Margus D. Morrison, 52, Andre Mackneil, 53, and Geraldine Talley, 62 years old. According to The Guardian, Crump and the attorneys co-representing the Whitfield family said they could file a lawsuit against Bushmaster, the maker of the assault-style weapon that Payton used.
Attorney Ken Abbarno said “all the signs and red flags are there” to track the suspect and prevent him from buying a gun and that threatening comments brought police to his high school this season. last spring and conduct a mental health assessment. Our thoughts continue to go out to all the loved ones of the victim.
