Remember the 2017 summer pop culture event, right? It was the summer when brash UFC star Conor McGregor stepped into the boxing ring to take on the great Floyd Mayweather. The bout ended predictably, in a Mayweather win in stoppage time, though McGregor certainly didn’t embarrass himself. It can be said that both men made a lot of money for that novelty event. It should come as no surprise, then, that each might be eager to do it all again. While it’s true that Mayweather is now in his forties and McGregor hasn’t had much luck in the octagon lately, both guys are flashy, recognizable stars. That said, while a rematch won’t yield as much green as the first, it’s still a pay-per-view event.
Every Sun: “Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor ‘very close’ to contract cuts for multi-million dollar rematch – with Money ‘ready to put his unbeaten record first,’ a source has claimed Father.” Sun The unnamed “insider” pointed out that “personal terms have been agreed … but there is still controversy over the number of innings, with Notorious wanting ten innings.” The insider, who is believed to be a member of Team Mayweather, also reports that the fight, if it happens, will drop to 155.
The insider went on to claim that Mayweather “is looking at next March’s fight in the Middle East with a potential fight between Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia as a yellow card.” Is this right? Is some of that true? What the truth is, no one knows except the interested parties themselves. The insider claims “agreement and rights have certainly been reached,” but what does that really mean?
In the five years since his flash defeat, Mayweather has been on an exhibition tour, raking in tons of money in the face of pretty competitive fares like Logan Paul while McGregor has lost 3/4 The ultimate fight in the UFC. Again, neither of them were in their prime. However, talk of a rematch is sure to attract attention. Why not? These guys have as high a reputation as anyone can get – and Mayweather’s nickname “Money” is for a reason. People will roll their eyes at the prospect of a rematch – but then they’ll cough up money to watch it. Both men know this. And so do the rest.
