Beijing 2024: Chery Tiggo 9 PHEV flagship SUV launched – 2.0T plug-in hybrid joins ICE model, launches Q4
Chery made its world debut to the Tiggo 9 PHEV at Auto China 2024, which took place in Beijing today. The recently concluded Chery Group launch event also saw the company reveal a new slogan for its Tiggo SUV range – Conquer with you, Protect with love.
The Tiggo 9 PHEV is a neat and beautiful large SUV, the design team has deliberately kept things simple. Based on the concept of ‘conquer’ and ‘protect’, the Tiggo 9 PHEV features a bold ‘Saturn Ring’ grille design (The Chery logo glows as usual) and the sides are very clean.
Configurations with day-opening doors have chrome frames with subtle accents on the rearmost pillars. A tornado track and just a ‘light catching’ panel in the area below – that’s it. That set of multi-spoke wheels is 20 inches in size and fits the luxury look very well. At the rear, there’s a full-width LED light strip, twin pipes and a huge PHEV emblem that looks like an afterthought.
Size wise, the Tiggo 9 is 4,810 mm long, 1,925 mm wide and 1,741 mm tall. For context, it’s 88mm longer, 65mm wider and 36mm taller than the current version. Tiggo 8 Pro, that’s not a small car. Chery says there’s an optional third-row seat that seats seven adults.
Inside, the flagship of the Tiggo range is rich in luxurious materials and the show car is trimmed in cream and blue leather. Unlike what we’ve seen from Chery so far with Mercedes-Benz-style conjoined screens, the screens here are visually separated and the center screen is a large 15.6-inch display. ,5K HD. The seats are ‘3D stitched’.
Under the hood is a PHEV powertrain that combines a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, an eight-speed automatic transmission and Chery’s ‘3DHT’ electric motor. The ICE produces 235 hp/385 Nm while the engine is good for 221 hp. Chery claims fuel economy of 5.2 liters/100 km in China’s WLTC mode, which equates to a range of more than 1,400 km.
The Chery Tiggo 9 PHEV will be available with the pure ICE version in the fourth quarter of 2024. Does the name Tiggo 9 sound familiar? It was also a sense of deja vu for this writer, because of him shot and killed the large SUV of the same name at Auto Shanghai 2023. However, it’s a pure ICE car with a different interior, so the look we see here could be a PHEV-specific design or a final update to the Tiggo 9 series.
