BC Turf Hero Rebel’s Romance joins Appleby’s Spa Squad


Coach Charlie Appleby has bolstered his Saratoga team with a pair of talented group/grade 1 winners in Rebel’s Romance And Mysterious Night who came? Racecourse Saratoga July 21 to join their stable friend Godolphin silver knot public tracking.

Rebel’s Romance, 5-year-old half-Irish son of dubawi completed its 2022 campaign on a four-race winning streak, reaching a group score/rank 1 in Grosser Preis von Berlin (G1) in August in Hoppegarten, Preis von Europa (G1) in September in Cologne and Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1T) in November in Keeneland.

Most recently, he finished seventh in his sole start in 2023 at the Dubai Sheema Classic (G1T) on March 25 at Meydan Racecourse.

According to New York Racing Association public information, Rebel’s Romance is aiming for $250,000 in Bowling Green (G2T) bets on July 30 with a target of $750,000 Sword Dancer Stakes (G1T) on August 26, providing a “Win and You Are” landing for the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Turf.

“He’s getting better with age as all Dubawi seem to do. Group 1 winner, Breeders’ Cup winner and he hasn’t run since Dubai World Cup night, his first start back this year. It’s not an ideal run, but he’s in good form,” Chris Connett, Appleby’s advertising assistant, NYRA, told NYRA.

Mysterious Night, a second-year Irish-born son of dark Angel also had previous success in North America, scoring 5 3/4 lengths over expertise in Summer Shares (G1T) last fall at Honeysuckle. This year, the flying gelding game has had two good starts in the UK.

Mysterious Night heads to the $500,000 National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame (G2T), a one-mile test for sophomores on August 4 that steady buddy Silver Knott is also targeted at. The second has raced twice this summer at Belmont Parkfinished third in the Pennine Ridge Stakes (G2T) and featured fifth in the 1 1/4 mile Belmont Derby Invitational (G1T).

While Rebel’s Romance and Mysterious Night were scheduled to end their quarantine on July 23, Silver Knott remained in New York and transported to Saratoga after the Belmont Derby.

“He had a very easy week after the race — walking by hand and jogging on the main track,” says Connett. “He’s back to some normal running and we’ll stretch his legs a bit more on Tuesday.”
