Bad Bunny makes history by becoming the first Latino to lead a Marvel Live-Action movie
Bad Bunny has secured itself a bit of history in the Marvel Universe. He is the first Latino to be chosen as lead in a live-action Marvel movie.
Presented by Sony Motion Pictures Group, El Muerto, tells the story of a wrestler named Juan Carlos Estrada Sanchez (also El Muerto) in the comics. According to the Marvel site, The character possesses powers and a mask passed down through generations. In the new movie, Bad Bunny will portray the character as an anti-hero about to inherit his father’s powers, according to Diversity.
Bad Bunny joins the Marvel Universe
The announcement was made during the recent CinemaCon event, an annual meeting of cinema owners. Sony President Sanford Panitch introduced the actor at the event. bad bunny, real name Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, spoke about his excitement for the opportunity.
“It was amazing, it was unbelievable. I like wrestling. I grew up watching wrestling and I am a wrestler. I’m a former champion so this is why I love the character,” said Bad Bunny. “I think it’s the perfect role for me and it’s going to be epic.”
Despite being Marvel’s first, it won’t be Bad Bunny’s first time taking on a role. Previously he lent his talents to Narcos: Mexico and another project named Cassandro.
He also acted in another movie alongside industry vets such as Brad Pitt and Sandra Bullock. That movie, titled High speed train, will premiere this summer in July. At CinemaCon, Bad Bunny talked about working with the film’s director David Leitch, who will also be joining him. El Muerto.
“A fun experience. David (Leitch) was amazing. I enjoyed working with him on my first film and now with this opportunity to bring El Muerto into life,” said Bad Bunny.
Those excited to see Bad Bunny take on the Marvel Universe will be waiting for a hot minute. El Muerto won’t hit theaters until January 12, 2024.
