Backscatter Publisher Review of the OM System OM-1

The full-frame sensor stole the limelight to make it feel like eternity. There’s been a seemingly endless array of high-quality full-frame mirrorless cameras hitting the headlines in recent years, and not just high-end options like Nikon Z9, Canon EOS R3 and Sony Alpha 1but there are more affordable options like Nikon Z5, Canon EOS R6 and Sony a7 Mark IV. You could be forgiven for thinking that no one is making cameras with smaller sensors anymore.

Of course, that’s not entirely true. Apparently, the APS-C size sensor (~1.5x crop factor) isn’t dead yet: We have brand new Canon EOS R7 and EOS R10the Nikon Z50 and new Z30and Sony’s “respectable” a6000 series, including top a6600 (overdue to refresh). And then we have Micro Four Thirds with a 2x crop factor. It’s also lively and engaging: February of this year saw the launch of two of the most premium body parts — the long-awaited Panasonic Lumix GH6 and the first camera under the OM System brand, OM-1.

OM-1 is the target of Backscatter’s latest device review out of recently Digital penalty shootout, and reviewer Jim Decker wasted no time addressing the question of sensor size. In short, yes, the resolution has a hit, but there is a huge benefit for those traveling with underwater shooters — the line of lenses is much smaller and correspondingly, on the whole, a small rig. more compact, much lighter. But the real question of course is: how well does the OM-1 work underwater? To answer that, Jim considers all the usual points of interest, including image and video quality, subject tracking, and white balance performance. For Jim, it’s a mixed bag, but for stills, the OM-1 impresses, with Backscatter hailing it as “the best 4/3 camera a photo enthusiast can get right now. hours.”
