Baby born in Tesla with help from Autopilot

We have heard of people doing some stupid things while putting too much trust in TeslaAutopilot driver assistance technology. Whether it is play a game, dozing off or, uh, something else?, it can be dangerous to vehicle occupants and other road users. On the other hand, when used correctly, a car that can help keep track of its lanes and the traffic around it can really improve safety and make driving less stressful. But what if that source of stress is due to hard work? As detailed by Seattle Times, a Pennsylvania woman delivering a baby in the front passenger seat of the family Tesla Model 3 while her husband drives – with the help of the car’s Autopilot function.

Yiran Sherry broke water one September morning, but she insisted on her husband Keating Sherry taking their 3-year-old son Rafa to school before going to the hospital. However, things (including the contractions) progressed rapidly from there, and the couple and their son went to the hospital together. However, the seven-mile drive became a draw in rush hour traffic, and their expectant baby girl refused to wait until they reached their destination.

Yiran focused on controlling her pain, thinking if she should start pushing. Keating activated Autopilot – providing some much needed help during this understandably stressful commute – keeping his left hand on the wheel while holding out his right for Yiran to squeeze. By the time they got to the hospital, the family of three had become a family of four, Yiran carrying the baby girl along the way. The hospital staff met them at their car, and the doctors cut the umbilical cord in the front seat before taking their patient inside. Keating was able to give the car a token (“C-minus”, in his words) to clean up before driving the family home the next day.

The baby girl, who they named Maeve, is believed to be the first baby to be born inside a Tesla. The Sherrys considered giving her the middle name Tess as an homage to the car, but instead named Lily in honor of Yiran’s mother. Yiran and Keating are considering buying Model 3 at the end of it lease.
